I Say Hello Top
I'm BACKKKKK!
Maybe not fully, but hey, I've summoned yet another guide and this time, I'm giving out free roam soap bars while stocks last! In this guide, I'll let your brain Spongebob everything from the differences between a tank, support and an initiator; every unique kit; how to play a roam; why vision is both vital and rather....unimportant; how the roam actually changes the fight; synergies; timing; understanding every hero; struggles; teamwork; the one defining roamer AND, what makes roaming suddenly so interesting to me and how this guide will give you that tiny nudge towards using that one roam hero you complain about for being horrible.
Seat tight, and prepare your mind to be blown into bits.
Note that a couple of heroes aren't my mains so any mistakes made here should be pointed out. Heroes I am not quite good at include Reim, Glaive, Joule, Blackfeather, Alpha, Krul, Ozo, Ringo, Rona, SAW, Skye, Taka, Lance and Phinn. Also note that this is a guide for ROAMING which means that any carry hero here is tuned more or less into the roam position with different items. This is not a carry guide.
Roam. Verb. Wander About Top
What is the word "roam"?
To wander about. Whether or not there's reasoning behind it, no one knows.
In games, roaming is defined by moving across the map. As a roamer, you are most probably the one without a definite "station" and you tend to travel between stations. And the roamer is a support.
Now, when I say support, don't think of electing a brand new president. Instead, think of it as a verb. In most games, there are the typical 'Healer' class and the 'Tank' class. They are called primary roles. Often, there'll be 2 or more roles in a character when it comes to defining their entire uniqueness. Just like you, every character was made with a different touch. The roles are simply a branch of what the character excels at.
Now, in my hopefully honest opinion, roamers or let's leave the term as X for now, are divided into multiple classes, preferably these 3 which then branch off into even more classes.
Class 1- Support. This is the primary role (or secondary or even tertiary role) of almost every hero who specializes in assisting the team in any way from buffs to debuffs and even to casting sustain spells. They can range from squishy,
Adagio,
Lyra but devastating to tanky,
Lance,
Catherine,
Ardan,
Fortress,
Phinn but disruptive. Heroes like this generally are equipped with something to provide the team with much more effects from CC (Crowd Control) to vision in order to counter the enemy.
Class 2- Tank. This is also considered a primary role for a lot of heroes. They lack the requirements to assist teams in a way supports do, but they make up for it with powerful defenses and health added like
Phinn,
Ardan,
Catherine,
Lance. Additionally, this class is not limited to supports only, in which some heroes like
Reim or Galive are natural tanks while also being powerful carries. Although they don't exactly rely on information, it is still crucial to provide the team with some.
Class 3- Initiator. This is one of the least recognized role. Not only
Fortress is an initiator. Any hero with the right build can initiate. Primary initiators often do have something in their kits that make them a leader of some sort to lead the team into fights, like the capability to cause distractions, cut the gap, stay ahead, provide sufficient information to attack and so on.
Basically as a roam, you don't have to balance these 3 classes out to find that perfect soup for your hero, you'll have to understand what they do best and capitalize from there. Say,
Adagio. From my perspective, he's a hybrid between a mage and a support while lacking the other 2 classes to actually be capable of standing on his own. This means that he's most probably fighting from the back line to unleash his full potential. Take another example like
Phinn. He balances all 3 of the classes out but he lacks seriously on speed which makes him a tinier version of a very very annoying Kraken.
Every hero is a mix of approx. 2 roles. The primary and the secondary. Different roles pair up to make different heroes.
Petal,
Celeste,
Skaarf are mage supports.
Adagio,
Lyra are support mages.
Reim is a mage tank.
Krul is a warrior tank.

Support branches- (In Vainglory, almost every support/roamer covers all three branches)
1- Damage supports
They tend to have a) built in damage, b) wonderful scaling to their kits or c) some form of CC that leaves enemies vulnerable to damage. These roamers contribute in terms of damage and mild CC.
Adagio with Agent of Wrath,
Lyra with Bright Bulwark and Principle Arcanum,
Lance with Impale,
Catherine with Stormguard,
Ardan with Blood for Blood,
Phinn with Quibble,
Fortress with Truth of The Tooth, Law of The Claw and Attack of The Pack.
2- Poke supports
They tend to have a) better range, b) low cooldowns, c) very very disruptive CC or d) some form of team assistance. They're heroes that can affect fights from afar before or after fights.
Adagio with 6.8 range, Gift of Fire, Agent of Wrath and Verse of Judgement,
Lyra with 6.8 range, Principle Arcanum, Imperial Sigil and Bright Bulwark,
Lance with Impale and Gythian Wall,
Catherine with Merciless Pursuit, Stormguard and Blast Tremor,
Ardan with Vanguard and Gauntlet,
Phinn with Quibble, Polite Company and Forced Accord,
Fortress with Law of The Claw and Attack of The Pack.

I Question How Roaming Is Good Top
Why roam?
1- It's satisfying when you keep 2 twits (preferably named) alive.
2- When you the only one surviving Joule's ult.
3- When you the only one surviving Skaarf's ult.
4- When you the only one doing shet and your carries feed, effectively wasting a match's worth of time.
5- When you feel like supporting.
6- When you wanna show you have godly reflexes.
7- When you die clutch saving a carry only to have the carry dive back into slaughterhouse.
8- When you die a hero.
9- When you reading this list, wondering how the heck you even got here.
10- When you enjoy building stuff that nullifies heroes almost completely.
11- When you like to tank.
12- When you're reading this, you know that deep down, you have this urge to try and roam for a change.
I Feel So Stupid Top
Problems a roamer/support face-
1) Carries who build too much defenses
2) Carries who don't build defenses
3) Carries who don't listen to the roamers
4) Carries who stick to the roamer 24/7
5) Carries who instalock
6) Carries who went double WP/CP comp building weird things later on.
7) Potatoes. Seriously, carbs shouldn't be taking up a chunk of the roamer's diets.
8) Enemies who outsmart you.
9) Carries who insmart you.
10) Enemies who work together more than your team.
11) Your team that works horribly together compared to the enemy team.
12) Rage-pingers
13) Happy-pingers
14) Enemy Taka that invades your jungle all the time
15) 1v3 Krul
16) 1v3 Alpha
17) 1v3 Petal (Okay, maybe not)
18) 3v3 mirror comps
