Threat Hero Notes
1
  No Threat
2
Lorelai Lorelai herself is little threat to us. Her Fish Food(A) when casted without standind on water is veri easy to dodge, as well as Splashdown(B). If something goes wrong, consider purchasing Celestial shroud.
3
Churnwalker Churnwalker himself is not dangerous, but be aware of him with conbination of some extra control skills, otherwise high number of deaths is guaranteed.
3
Lyra Lyra is dangerous on herself only when she uses CP-power build, but always be careful of all enemy team jumping into you with her Arcane Passage(C). Can be easily countered with proper map vision(consider SuperScout 2000 as an option).
3
SAW Harrass him with Mystic Missile(A), trying not to dive hard. Always keep Chrono Driver(B) to counter his Roadie Run(A) when you less than 50 % of your health.
4
Ardan Ardan can catch us into Gauntlet(C), which is synonim for "death". Solution to this problem is purchasing hardly into defense items(several items out of 6 slots) or just keeping third row-positions in teamfights at the beginning. In terms of damaging items look forward to purchase Spellfire and Aftershock.
4
Flicker Flicker is dangerous because of the ability to hide allies with Mooncloak(C). So consider buing Flare Loader in aerly game close to lvl 6. Also practice dodging Binding Light(A) in lobby with friends or guildmates.
4
Lance Lance is very comfortable enemy in a lane, just harrass him with Mystic Missile(A) into Arcane Rite(Heroic) and dodge his Impale(A).
4
Magnus Mirror against Magnus is all about mastery of dodging opponent's skillshots and succesfully landing our's. In terms of items, early game options are Sprint boots, Kinetic Shield or Reflex Block. Good late game purchases are Celestial shroud and Aegis.
4
Petal Save boots to run away from her Spontaneous Combustion(C). Pulseweave not recommended, as it can be easily activated by Munion pets.
4
San Feng San Feng is dangerous only because of his insainly high damaging potential with his Divine Fist(B). To avoid fisting for 300 bucks, practice dodging San Feng's skills in lobby, it is relatively easy to do. Always remember, that you can interrupt his Divine Fist(B) and Master's Lesson(C) with Chrono Driver(B).
4
Skaarf Practice dodging Spitfire(A) and wait until heroic perk Fan the Flames will go off if you got hit in order not to be slowed and heavily damaged after with Goop(B) activation.
4
Tony Practice dodging Trash talk(B), or keep third row at the beginning of teamfight. Lately in game, consider buying Pulseweave.
5
Alpha Alpha is only high-dangerous enemy when she catches us with Prime Directive(A). Counter it by using Chrono Driver(B) under you while she charges or just practice dodging it in lobby with friends or guildmates. Also if Alpha will be put into Infinite Reboot(Heroic), she can became a powerful setup for devastating Seraphic Flare(C).
5
Baptiste Baptiste croud control can catch us unexpectively, so keep your Chrono Driver(B) for being catched in Ordained (B). Situational options in terms of defensive items can be Pulseweave, Metal Jacket and Atlas Pauldron. Remember: Atlas Pauldron requires an enemy to be pretty close to you and has a small cast time.
5
Grace Graces main threat to us, her Benediction(A) can be countered by using Core Collapse(it also interrupts her Holy Nova(B)) near us or purchasing Celestial Shroud or Pulseweave. Good early game pick can be Reflex Block(REMEMBER: barriers help to dodge stuns!).
5
Joule Remeber that Joule's Big Red Button(C) can be interrupted with our Chrono Driver(B). Her Rocket Leap(A) on us can be easily dodged by using boots.
5
Malene Malene is a bit annoying to stay a lane against her because of her several abilities to dodge or neutralize our stun and Heliogenesis(A). Can be cured by jebaiting her, dodging her skillshots and harassing her via Chrono Driver(B) and Mystic Missile(A) when she comes closer to last hit a minion. Reflex Block is a good early game purchase.
5
Phinn Phin is dangerous only because of his Forced Accord(C) hook. Practice dodging it in lobby with friends or guildmates. Good purchases can be Reflex Block, Pulseweave, Celestial Shroud.
5
Silvernail Pretty comfortable lane opponent, just dont overwhelm to much and do not stand or walk through his Stake(A).
5
Varya Interrupt Anvil's Hammer(C) and Arc Recursion(B) while Varya is chanelling. If Varya uses Stormforged Spear(A) on its own, it also can be canceled witch Core Collapse(B) or easily dodged. Good late game purchase will be Aegis.
6
Adagio WP Adagio can blow us away, but due to his lack of super-mobility can be countered by Chrono Driver(B) or purchasing Metal Jacket and Pulseweave in late game. Adagio's ultimate can be easily interrupted by Chrono Driver(B).
6
Kinetic Kinetic has no hard engage potential, so just practice dodging her Plasma Driver(A) with friends in lobby in order to start enjoying laning against her!Always remember about Kinetic Charged Pulse(C) and that it can be countered by hiding behind structure or ally hero, or large creature. Or by specialized items like Celestial Shroud, in some ways Aegis or Reflex Block in early game.
6
Samuel Samuel is annoying lane enemy. But his skillshots can be dodged pretty easily. Do not fight with Samuel when he is in his Drifting Dark(B)! He gets to much good buffs so you will be outplayed.
6
Skye Dodge Forward Barrage(A) by rapidly moving left and right(hold and move right mouse button if PC or slide not click on touchpad), do not step into Death From Above(C) and interrupt Forward Barrage(A) after Suri Strike(B) initiation, not before, with Chrono driver(B). Late game purchase can be Aegis or Pulseweave.
6
Vox Vox is a problem because of his silence due to Wait for It(C). But it can be dodged because of its animation. try not to stay close to ally heroes that are affected by Resonance(Heroic) and focused by Vox.
6
Ylva Counter her Binding Mine(C) with wards. Save your Core Collapse(B) for Ylva using Crimson Fang(B) on you. Purchase Metal Jacket or Pulseweave.
7
Catherine Catherine's Merciless Pursuit(A) into Blast Tremor(C) can literally delete us from teamfights, so try to keep at high distance as possible from teamfights in order not to be caught. You can also interrupt Merciless Pursuit(A) with Chrono Driver(B). Item-wise, look forward to Pulseweave or Celestial Shroud. Also look forward to purchasing Sprint boots or Reflex Block in early game. REMEMBER: If Catherine uses her Merciless Pursuit(A) right in your barrier from Reflex Block, stun will not affect you!
7
Celeste Celeste is not a comfortable lane opponent, but our advantage against her will be our basic attack range(6 compared to 5.3) and Mystic Missile(A) range(10 compared to 7.5 of Celeste's Heliogenesis(A)) in early and mid-game. Always remember after Celeste's lvl. 6 that she can blow us away no matter where we are with Solar Strom(C). TIP: stars of Solar Storm collide while hitting enemy buildings or legendary minions, so they can be used as a defense.
7
Fortress Beware of Fortress initiations by placing proper wards and saving your Chrono Driver(B) for Fortress using Truth of the Tooth(A) on you. Good item pick would be Pulseweave in late game, in early game look forward to sprint boots and Reflex Block.
7
Gwen Gwen is annoying opponent in lane, because of her critical damage from heroic perk and ability to remove slow and stuns with Skedaddle(B). Just do not engage to hard on Gwen and dodge her ultimate Aces High(C). Good late game purchase would be Metal Jacket.
7
Reim Reim, the same as the Alpha, is dangerous when he can get close to us. Practice to dodge his Valkyrie(C) and purchase Reflex Blockin early game, Pulseweave or Aegis in late game.
7
Ringo Hellfire Brew(C) is easy to interrupt with Core Collapse. Be affraid of Ringo in Mid game, because his gank potential on us is huge. If you have a lane against him, consider priorotising Sprint Boots and Kinetic Shield or Coat of Plates, or Reflex Block purchases in early game.
8
Baron Baron is capable of doing insane WP damage. So look forward for Metal Jacket in late game. In teamfights try to be in third lines, because his only ability to initiate on us is Jump Jets(B). And play in headphones against Baron, because his ultimate Ion Cannon(C) makes special sound before dropping orbital strike. If you have a lane against him, consider priorotising Sprint Boots and Coat of Plates purchases in early game.
8
Glaive Glaive successful Afterburn(A) initiation on us can end unhappily for us. The easiest way to counter it is to properly put wards in lane or by catching Glaive while hi is leaping with Chrono Driver(B), or buying Reflex Block and Sprint Boots. In late game, think about purchasing Metal Jacket or Pulseweave.
8
Grumpjaw Grumpjaw has a pretty straightforward initiatons on us, combining his Grumpy(A), Hangry(B) and Stuffed(C). Practice dodging Grumpy(A) like Yates' hooks, and counter his abilities by placing Chrono Driver(B) near you while he charges. Defense items recomended are Reflex Block, Atlas Pauldron, Metal Jacket or Pulse Weave. Remember: Atlas Pauldron requires enemy to be pretty close to you and has a small cast time.
8
Inara Inara's high mobility due to her Nature's Wrath(C) makes our existance on map uncomfortable. Save Chrono Driver(B) specifically for Inara's initiation on you. Also her gank potential can be signficantly reduced by purchasing Metal Jacket, Aegis or Pulse Weave. Always remember about Inara's heroic perk while fighting in jungle!
8
Kestrel Kestrel can initiate on us using Active Camo(B). Counter it by wards ans Flare Loader. Always remember about Kestrel global ultimate One Shot One Kill(C) and that it can be countered by hiding behind structure or ally hero, or large creature. Or by specialized items like Celestial Shroud, in some ways Aegis or Reflex Block in early game.
8
Krul Danger with Krul is very close to Grumpjaw, so counter his abilities by placing Core Collapse(B) near you while he charges. Defense items recomended are Atlas Pauldron, Metal Jacket or Pulse Weave. Remember: Atlas Pauldron requires enemy to be pretty close to you and has a small cast time. Celestial shroud is also an interesting choice. NEVER try to 1 vs 1 against Krul! Only fight from the distance.
8
Yates Yates Wolf's Maw(A) into Overwhelm(B) is deadly dangerous combo for us. Also always remember that Yates can fall down on your head with his Iron Mandate while you are at low health, so keep your Chrono Driver(B) and Healing Potion as a surprise. Do not be lazy and practice dodging Yates hooks in lobby with your friends or guildmates! In Late game consider purchasing Celestial Shroud, Aegis, Metal Jacket or Pulse Weave.
9
Anka Pretty much the same as Idris, Anka can blow us away with procast, while having a great tool for dodging our resistance in her Mirage(C). Pain can be decreased by purchasing Sprint Boots and Kinetic Shield or Reflex Block in early game. In Late game consider purchasing Celestial Shroud, Aegis or Pulse Weave.
9
Blackfeather Blackfeather is very dangerous for us during mid-game(his heroic provides him insane damaging potential). Due to his respectively short ranges of Feint of Heart(A) and Rose Offensive(C), try to stay in third lanes during team fights, keeping the distance with Blackfeather. . If you have a lane against him, consider priorotising Sprint Boots and Coat of Plates purchases in early game. In Late game consider purchasing Aegis, Metal Jacket or Pulse Weave.
9
Idris No matter his CP or WP build, is extrremely dangerous because he can blow us away with procast, while having a great tool for dodging our resistance in his Shimmer Strike(C). Pain can be decreased by purchasing Sprint Boots and Kinetic Shield or Coat of Plates and Reflex Block in early game. In Late game consider purchasing Celestial Shroud, Aegis, Metal Jacket or Pulse Weave
9
Ozo Same as Reza, Ozo can initiate hardly on you, dodging your Heliogenesis(A) and Chrono Driver(B). His gank potential can be signficantly reduced by purchasing Celestial Shroud, Reflex Block, Metal Jacket, Aegis or Pulse Weave. Also save your boots for his initiation and consider purchasing Celestial Shroud if Ozo starts with Bangarang(C) while initiating on you.
9
Reza Reza's mobility, insane damage and blinks are great threats to us. If you have a lane against him, consider priorotising Sprint Boots and Kinetic Shield purchases in early game. Save your Chrono Driver(B) for Reza using Troublemaker(B) or Netherform Detonator(C) on you. In late game, his gank potential can be signficantly reduced by purchasing Celestial Shroud, Aegis or Pulse Weave. And try to avoid his Scorcher(A) early in lane by moving unpredictably left and right (holding the right mouse button when playing PC or just sliding finger on touchpad, not clicking), so making harder for him to aplly his trait on you.
9
Rona Rona is the least uncomfortable to counter out of all tier-2 red threats, but be carefull of her Into the Fray(A) alongside with Foesplitter(B) high-damage combo on you! save Chrono Driver(B) specifically for Rona's initiation on you. Also her gank potential can be signficantly reduced by purchasing Metal Jacket, Atlas Pauldron or Pulse Weave. Just use Pulse Weave wisely, saving charge active for Rona's initiation. Rona's ultimate can be interrupted with Chrono Driver(B). And remember that Atlas Pauldron requires enemy to be pretty close to you and has a small cast time.
10
Kensei Kensei is extremely mobile due to his Lotus Strike(A) and Path of the Ronin(C), can neutralize our stun via barrier of his heroic perk, so he is deadly dangerous for our existance. If you have a lane against him, consider priorotising Sprint Boots and Coat of Plates and Reflex Block purchases in early game. In late game look forward to Metal Jacket, Pulseweave.
10
Koshka Due to Koshka's outsatnding ganking potential and high speed, she is one of the most threatning foes to Celeste! Consider checking bushes with Heliogenesis(A) when exploring map without allies, save Chron Driver(B) specifically for Koshka's initiation on you. Also her gank potential can be signficantly reduced by purchasing Celestial Shroud, Aegis or Pulse Weave. Just use them wisely, saving charges active for Koshka's initiation.
10
Taka Taka's X-Retsu(C), followed by Kaiten(A) and few attacks=100% death to us. Can be prevented by purchasing Celestial Shroud, Aegis or Pulse Weave. Save your Core Collapse(B) especially for Taka's initiation on you, but remember that during Kaiten(A) Taka is invulnerable, so try to use Chrono Driver(B) immediately AFTER Kaiten. Good preventive purchase would be Flare Loader, it secures your map movemets and helps to check camps, catch Taka when he tries to escape invisible, but most importantly to prevent his initiations on you early in game.

Introduction Top

Magnus entered Vainglory not so long ago, but promised himself as a highest-tier pick for mid lane as main CP carry. He is capable of dealing impressive amount of damage in teamfights, has croud control, but requires startegic planning of actions and timings in teamfights, skillful skill landing. I suppose new and experienced players may find this guide useful and maybe get a better understanding of a hero and reasons behind his more than 55% winrate(based on vainaura open statistics, 02/04/2019, statistics itself).

Commentary on Abilities Top

Arcane Rite
The source of whole our gameplay. Provides marks on enemies if we succesfully hit them with our abilities. Mark lasts for 4 seconds. Magnus basic attack on target with mark will cause it to explode, but it will have a different animation with special cast time. Proper managment of Arcane Rite procs can provide insane damage income or long stun duration in combination with Chrono Driver(possible stun of 2 seconds, divided into two 1 second long). Practice playing stratigecally and remember that all of your other skills benefit from Arcane Rite mark.

Mystic Missile
Keep in mind that hitting an enemy with Arcane Rite mark scatters the missile to all other nearby targets. It opens great possibilities of combining this tactic with Seraphic Flare(C) for 40% damage increase on it. Also Mystic Missile is great laning tool for safely minion lasthitting and applying pressure on opponent in early and mid-game. Ranged heroes can be bullied by using Mystic Missile on minions with mark on them, because then missile spreads with damage on all enemies in significant range, applying heroic to them. Practice predicting enemy moves and successfully landing Mystic Missile in lobby with friends or guildmates. Upgrading it to maximum level increases range to very significant 12 instead of 10.

Chrono Driver
Successful landing of Chrono Driver on itself provides a stun of 0.4/0.5/0.6/0.7/1.0 seconds. If you have already applied your heroic Arcane Rite with magic missile, Chrono Driver will stun twice. Easiest stun can be applied if enemy is positioned at the maximum range of Chrono Driver which is 10. Chrono Driver is the only of our's consistent lane-clearing tool, and is not a strong one.

Seraphic Flare
Our main damage source, can totally desttoy whole enemy team when used properly. Has cast time of approximately 1 second, so can be interrupted. Deals 40% more damage to heroes with mark on them, and if it kills an enemy, launches Mystic Missile to all nearby targets. Has long cast range, can be used for ancient creeps stealing from safe positions.

Skill combinations in teamfights

Perfect teamfight scenerio for us starts with using Chrono Driver(B) on opponents, stumming them and applying Arcane Rite. Then our Mystic Missile(A) will spread on nearby enemies, increasing our damage. When health of one of enemies drops to critcal rate, so that we can kill him with our ultimate, finish him with Seraphic Flare(C). That guarantees maximum damage.

You also can go for maximum stun duration, whuch can be 2 second if Chrono Driver(B) is upgraded to maximum level. To do so, start fight with Mystic Missile(A) and then use Chrono Driver(B), finishing with Seraphic Flare(C).

Build Logic Top

ALL of our abilities benefit significantly only from CP(crystal power). So the damage items are all to be CP. But they all should cover our weak sides and support our gameplay. Perfect first item in most situations will be Shatterglass, because it boost our damaging potential to crazy height. It makes our lasthitting easier thankfully to our heroic arcane rift, makes our impact in teamfights gamechanging in mid game.

In terms of boots I see equally reasonable Halcyon Chargers or Journey Boots. Halcyon Chargers reduces cooldown of our abilities, solves some of our mana issues- perfect pick in every situation, but when you know that you need engaging potential more than minor cooldown and mana buffs, optimal solution will be Journey Boots. With our low cooldown on magic missile(A) it is very easy to reset their cooldown to 10 seconds straight after sprint end. For ultimate teamplay I strongly recommend considering Teleport Boots as an option. Use them on scout cams placed in tactical spots to surprise your enemies.

Third slot is one where things start to get optional. For beginners in order to live longer in teamfights and feel more comfortable in lane I recommend going for Eve of Harvest. It gives us CP, mana and regen, and most importantly lifesteal on abilities and autoattacks. For more consistent players I recommend going for Clockwork. It solves all our mana issues, gives a little bit of CP, but most importantly lowers cooldowns on our abilities. with Clockwork we can harrass our opponents with magic missile non stop, lowering cooldowns on our Chrono Driver(B) and Seraphic Flare(C) for 3 seconds each time we land magic missile(A). If you are dominating your opponent, perfect solution will be second Shatterglass as it scales our damage to EXTRA THICC level. If you have difficultes landing your skillshots or enemies try to run in different directions from your Chrono Driver(B) or Seraphic Flare(C), very good second or first slot pick can be frostblade. But if you are facing opponents that have a lot of lifesteal-based items like Serpent Mask in their slots and supports that heal or barrier a lot, build Spellfire. It gives a lot of CP and applies a mortal wound with our abilities, which means that the healing rate, barriers and fortified health from all sources are reduced significantly. And ir also goes well on our magic missile(A) low cooldown. If your opponents have a lot of health/armor and take long to take down, perfect third slot would be Dragon's Eye into Broken Myth. Dragon's Eye gives highest CP boost out of all 3000-gold items, but only if you are in fight for some amount of time. Broken Myth is effective when enemies try to counter you by going shield defense items such as cekestial shroud or Aegis.

Fourth slot can be any of items listed in previous paragraph that has lower priority in terms of strategy. If enemies are pressing to hard, consider building defensive item. The perfect slot would be Slumbering Husk. It protects both from CP and WP, also granting HP(health points) boost when you are focused. If enemy team relies heavily on WP, go for Metal Jacket. If you are focused by target skills like Taka's X-Retsu(C) consider buying Celestial Shroud. In most sutuations when you are ganked by heroes with high mobility good pickup would be pilseweave. Occasional defensive item is also Atlas Pauldron. If you are focused in teamfight by meele WP-based hero that relies on attack speed like Krul or Rona, Atlas Pauldron will break their plans. BUT REMEMBER: Atlas Pauldron requires enemy to be pretty close to you and has a small cast time. More about threatning heroes and late game items for them you can read in "Threat Meter" higher on this page.

If you are hardly focused focused from early on by heroes with high stun or debuff pool like ,for example, Catherine, good early game pick will be Reflex Block. It doesn't only gives a barrier worth 100-600 (level 1-12), but most importantly lock all debuffs for 1.5s. In late game it also can be upgraded to Aegis or sold to free a slot.

If you can not rely on your support and feel need to jungle a bit alongside laning, good strategy will be to start with Stormguard Banner. I reccomend going for Crystall Treant, because he is very close to mid lane, where we are supposed to play in 4.1. meta, or Gold Treant. Killing a Crystal Treant drops an orb that enhances your crystal damage by 20% and makes your crystal damage lifesteal for 10%, and heals approximately 25% of our maximum health in 10 seconds, which will help in lane greatly. Killing a Gold Treant drops an orb that gives 220 gold and heals approximately 25% of our maximum health in 10 seconds.

If you have heroes with invisibility on your enemies team, consider buying Flare Loader early on. It will help you and your team to catch them if they will use their invisibility to escape, will help to check spots like Dragonclaw pit or bushes, also giving +150 HP for 300 gold. In such matches this item helps greatly especially when travelling on map alone.

Aftershock is a decent pick against enemies with high health, it provides some survivability and mana regen with cooldown reduction. I do not recommend going for Aftershock and Clockwork in one build. This will just stop our damage scaling into mid-late game. In such cases prefer some 3000 gold pure CP item like Dragon's Eye or Spellfire. Some people find Alternating Current an option, it helps to harrass by hand painfully and faster activate our heroic arcane rift. TIP: if you going for Alternating Current, go for Weapon Infusion in late game instead of Crystal Infusion, because attack speed will boost your damage much more than pure CP addition.

Starting items Top

There are several ways to start on Magnus depending on lane you are going to face. Remember the proverb: " Well begun is half done!". If the lane is against meele hero with medium gank(for example, Celeste) potential or range hero with low gank potential(for example, SAW), I advice to go for two Crystal Bit. It will guarantee you 98 damage by hand on lane creeps, which makes lasthitting rather comfortable, while also maximazing damage from abilities.

If you are going to face heroes with gank potential higher than medium(red group in "Threat Meter") feel free to start with one Crystal Bit and Sprint Boots. This will give us an opportunity to escape if hard engaging starts on us, which is very important because we do not have ANY movement-based or escaping skills.

Also in the beginning Celeste has some considerable mana issues, especially if you have to use skills in lane very often. For such special occasions start with Crystal Bit and Energy Battery. You do not waste money there, because Energy Battery builds greatly into Halcyon Chargers or Eve of Harvest.

Magnus' Pros and Cons, Combinations with Heroes Top

Pros:
  • Very high AoE damage potential, does not reduce with time, but good only for teamfights
  • Skillshot croud control, interrupts abilities and locks in place
  • Very comfortable cooldown on ultimate serahic flare(C)of such high power
  • Scales well in all game stages
  • High potential for combinations with other abilities in Vainglory
  • Comfortable basic attack animation
    Cons:
    • Literally NO movement or defensive ability to escape when being ganked
    • Early game mana pool and mana regen problems
    • Very weak lane clearing possibilities
    • Skillshots require perfect landing and on themselves are not so hard to be dodged

Consider this information while trying to understand your role in team, game strategy against enemy pick and all possibilities in combinations and counterplays to enemies moves.

Magnus has very high combination possibilities with
Catherine due to her Merciless Pursuit(A), with San Feng due to his Master's Lesson(C), with Baptiste due to his Ordained(B) and Fearsome Shade(C), with Tony due to his Trash talk(B), with Ylve due to her Charge Shot(A) and, of course, Binding Mine(C), with Samuel due to his Oblivion(C).

Very good pick for support slot for Magnus will be Lorelai because of her insane area control skills, Ardan or Lyra because of their capabilities to give barriers/heal and zoning control, Yates or Churnwalker due to their hooks and stuns.

Conclusion Top

Magnus is a decent CP main pick in today's 4.1. meta because of his insane CP damage in teamfights, ability to stun, excellent game presence and high impact in mid-late game. If she is followed by proper support that will cover her weak sides(for example, Lyra), lane where you are standing will become a paradise to you and a nightmare for your opponent.
