Guide updates
11/3/17- Guide created. Different guide title this time :V
13/3/17- Gonna add more beef to the Playing Glaive section and also add to the Synergy section some other time
14/3/17- Shifted Lane Glaive behind Jungle Glaive as some people (-_- ) don't like the idea of Lane Glaive
15/3/17- Added threats. Take with a grain of salt(Though do comment if you think a character should be higher or lower). The threats may differ for different players
19/3/17- Finished(sort of) Fighting with WP Glaive and also the Captain Synergy
Greetings and welcome to my guide on my first main, Glaive!
Glaive has on of the most terrifying abilities on the fold, Afterburn. When professional teams pick Glaive, it's for his Afterburn. Glaive can force people into tight corners and destroy them, all while tanking damage with his above average base health
This guide is heavily based on Gold3n's guide on Reim, which is based on Neko's guide on Koshka. All credit goes to him/her (wow even this is copied I'm really unoriginal). I really liked the layout. Also, I used some of the templates from here to make the guide look nicer. As they say, imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
Glaive Lane?
It can work when played correctly, can dominate if played well. Just look at CullTheMeek's Lane Glaive(though that was ages ago it is still viable imo). When the enemy Carry gets too close, Afterburn behind him and destroy him XD
Glaive's critical strikes cleave in a 4-meter cone in front of him.
Cleave deals half damage to minions.
This perk allows you to hit multiple enemies, making farming easier and gathering Breaking Point stacks faster by hitting and critting multiple enemy heroes
Glaive rockets in the target direction, damaging all enemies along the way. His next basic attack is replaced by a frightening blast that knocks his target back 5.5 meters and briefly stuns them.
The most dangerous ability on the fold(imo). It has so much utility. It flings Glaive forward, punts and stuns the first enemy hit.
1) Defensive utility, the sissy side of Glaive
- Can dash through walls
- Long (and I mean looooong) range
- Stun can slow enemies down
- Stuns skill channels such as Verse of Judgement and the Gauntlet
2) Offensive utility, the lion side of Glaive
- Ganking
- Stunning defensive skills
- Dodging skillshots(maybe)
And you get more stuns while playing CP Glaive! I am not putting CP Glaive in this guide cus it's basically a second roam(a ton of Afterburns). Comment if you want me to add it in :P
When you try to whack someone with Afterburn while you are alone, try to hit him/her into a wall nearby. The 5.5 meter separation after using Afterburn may be just enough for the enemy hero to escape, so pushing him/her into a wall ensures that you can get a few basic attacks in immediately after punting.
Later nerd!
Punting into the wall instead
When you pick a direction, Afterburn will take you to the circumference of the circle
Just in case you have to Afterburn through this wall
Ok for the veteran players you may be frustrated with the enemy carry consistently Reflex Blocking your Afterburns. If you don't want it Reflex Blocked, just bait(or wait) it out!
Abz0luteZer0 3op5me
Baited(Idek Waited? Wasted? eh watchamacallit) :D
Though you have to sit there for 1 second before the Reflex Block is over, which is risky
This ability deals weapon damage, but it can deal bonus crystal damage if you have any crystal power.
Triggers basic-attack effects.
Passive: Increases critical-strike chance and AOE-cleave damage of basic attacks.
An attack animation cancel, which means it cancels your previous attack animation and instantly casts Twisted Stroke's critical strike. It's sorta like stutter stepping. If you don't know what that is, check out ShinKaigen's video on Stutter Stepping:
Swings Glaive's axe in a 5.4-meter circle, dealing massive area damage that increases with the number of Bloodsong stacks used. This removes all stacks.
Passive: Glaive generates Bloodsong stacks from basic attacking or from receiving basic attacks (max 20 stacks).
Each stack grants Glaive bonus lifesteal.
The only real point of this ability is the passive lifesteal it grants you. Only use Bloodsong when you are about to die and might as well try to dish out as much damage as possible, but even that is a bad idea. By the time you are about to die you should have quite a lot of Breaking Point stacks which makes you deal more Weapon damage than what Bloodsong has to offer, and the channel time is quite long(compared to your basic attack with attack speed). And if you use Bloodsong you lose all the lifesteal from the stacks. So don't max your ultimate, and don't use it(at all).
Well I guess there is some use for Bloodsong
For example if the enemy has a stealth character you can use Bloodsong's AoE to reveal him/her.
O-O I see you O-O
Even with CP this skill deals pathetic damage. The CP ratios are too low
Be prepared to catch their Carry out of position, whether in lane or jungle or in either base, then Afterburn in, shove the Carry into your team and delete. Watch the enemy team FEEL THE HOPELESSNESS! and kill them as well.
For example, punish the Carry for wandering too close to your side of the lane
WP Glaive Item Explanation
Item
Function
Gives this kitty cat the power to tear his enemies apart
Extra damage during longer brawls plus attack speed
Slice and dice with the extra crit chance and attack speed for more cleaves
Afterburn an enemy, preferably their Carry, into your Carry and go all in on him. If their Carry is dead the enemy team has a lower chance of survival. In certain situations, for example if they have an ultimate you need to stun like Adagio's Verse of Judgement, you have to save your Afterburn to stun it. So don't waste it on their Carry unless the ultimate will not affect your team much. Try to Reflex Block their Atlas Pauldron if they have one, and also Atlas Pauldron their Weapon heroif you have bought an Atlas Pauldron.
Tips
1. Don't spam Afterburn, it takes up a TON of energy.
2. Don't spam Twisted Stroke(too much), it takes up a TON of energy
3. You know what don't spam Bloodsong either, basic attack
4. Know your enemy, know their ultimates and which ones you can stun/get out of with Afterburn
Fortress can boost Glaive's movement speed to catch up with slippery enemies who dodge his Afterburn. His wolves are also super annoying, making the enemy team decide to target your team while bleeding to death or waste 9 basic attacks trying to clear the wolves.
Able to permanently lock enemies into pulls stuns and pushes alongside Glaive. He is quite slow though, so do not enter a fight by yourself unless Phinn is nearby.
ALL HAIL THE GAUNTLET! Shove your enemies into his Gauntlet for fun lol. His Vanguard is good for early game ganks so you can run behind the enemy carry and Afterburn him into your team no matter how far back he is. He is just as mobile as you, use that to your advantage by making normally risky plays such as diving.
The CC King of Vainglory, can lock down every character(except Phinn he can't be countered :O) with chain stuns and roots. Lance and your Afterburn can continously root and stun your enemies into endless despair.
Gwen has her Skedaddle to save herself, which makes Glaive's Afterburn a lot less useful. If Gwen had a damaging ability instead of skedadle, she would have more synergy with Glaive
Samuel's absurd ability to heal back from the brink of death and back coupled by his high base damage make him a fantastic solo hero. With Glaive, Samuel can unleash Oblivion without worrying about the enemy team strolling out without wasting a Reflex Block as Glaive can punt them back in.
Kestrel's arrows take a very long time to shoot(in comparison to other characters) make her less able to maximise the value of Afterburn pushing an enemy towards her(unless there's an Active Camo trap there already)
Blackfeather can quickly assassinate many carries, especially ones fed right to him by Afterburn. He is melee though, making 2 melee characters on the team, which isn't always good(especially if they have a Reim)
Baron has a rough time landing his skillshots and running away, and Glaive can peel for him with his Afterburn
Like Kestrel, his skillshots are too slow, his Goop is too small to punt enemies into consistently. His ultimate cannot killsteal kraken from base
Usually SAW can't catch up with his target, but with Glaive's Afterburn delivering enemies to him, SAW can finally stop feeding and start carrying!
I started playing Glaive after reading an article about "How to win at Vainglory"(lol that was so long ago), Glaive was mentioned in the article and I thought he was pretty cool, and he was 2000 glory at the time so why not? I started out with a build suggested from my friend(SM,TM,TT,SB,Boots if you're wondering(no don't try that)) and it worked really well(for the lower tiers).
I then gravitated towards other heroes( Taka for instance, since no one had a clue how important vision was). But I'm back piloting Glaive and it's working out in ranked so I'll be playing him way more often :D
I just wanna say something, this guide is base on MY opinion on how to play Glaive. It may not be the optimal way, but it has been working out for me. Play Glaive however you like, this is just a guideline
Hi! I'm BlazeCharonChron from SEA server. I started VG when Ozo came out, and now 1 year later I'm still terrible at cs. CURRENTLY GUNNING FOR 20cs/min!!!
Studies are really getting to me, so I'm not playing as often as I wanna :(
But whatevs still grinding Vainglorious
If you are reading this, please stop feeding and start carrying ;)
