Hello to all who read this guide. My IGN is Izzie007 and I have been playing Vainglory (VG) for about a 6 or 7 months now. I love this game and I don't play on a team or in competitions but, I am very competitive. When I first started playing this game; I absolutely sucked at playing Glaive. I have forced myself to learn and have gotten pretty good with him. I am making this guide to help others learn to play and build him. I hope you all enjoy this build. It is kind of basic and well, somewhat, common sense. The point is that once this build is learned than you can really put the hurt on another Team. Some of my best games were with this build. For example, I have gone 10+ kills and assists with only 2 or 3 deaths. Its all about learning the builds and how they must be used with the hero.
Enjoy :) and please feel free to comment.
Hunt the Weak
Slot: Heroic Perk
Glaive's critical strikes cleave in a cone in front of him.
This passive seems like it doesn't do much, but if you are standing in the right spot it can really hurt your enemies. The keyword is positioning. This passive really shines against triple melee compositions, or double melee carry compositions. In most teams, the melee like to stand right on top of each other and in some cases ranged as well. I have seen many heroes, such as Reim, that like to stack with the melee. Glaives' melee at this point will hit all three enemies and overall become a powerhouse.
Afterburn
Slot: A
Glaive rockets in the target direction, damaging all enemies along the way. His next basic attack is replaced by a frightening blast that knocks his target back 5.5 meters.
This ability is so extremely versatile. It’s good for initiating a team fight, escaping from an ace situation, chasing an enemy, disengaging and well it just does really good damage. The main thing that is use this ability for is it push your enemies out of position. Within the first 3 minutes of the game and you have finished farming your jungle; you and your roamer would go to the lane to try for the gank. If your enemy isn't paying attention and over extends their hero past the mid point, you can use this ability to lunge behind him and push him into your team for an easy gank. This is my primary use. The only other use I have for it is to either escape from the enemy, if we are about to be aced, or to dive (chase) an enemy 1 hit from being killed. The recent update has increased the amount of energy that it requires to use so you must be very careful as to how and when you use this ability. If used correctly, it can win you the game or allow your team the chance to comeback from a lose. If used incorrectly, you will basically turn Glaive into a suicide case.
Twisted Stroke
Slot: B
Passive: Increase critical strike chance and AOE cleave damage of basic attacks.
Activate: Instantly execute a critical strike. This deals weapon damage and is treated like a basic attack, but can deal bonus crystal damage if you have any crystal power. Cleave deals half damage to minions.
Their is nothing fancy about this ability. It is a basic attack. The important thing to know about this ability is that it has a much larger range than glaive’s auto attacks, and it is always a critical strike. As Glaive’s passive reads, your critical strikes will cleave in a radius in front of you. Besides the guaranteed critical strike, this ability also gives Glaives' passive critical strike chance. Now You won’t get many critical strikes until after you put a few points into it, but once you overdrive it, it gives 25% crit chance. Crit chance is a stat that works quite well with weapon power, Attack Speed and Crit Chance!
Bloodsong
Slot: C
Passive: Glaive will generate Bloodsong stacks from basic attacking or from receiving basic attacks. Each stack grants him bonus lifesteal. Max 20 stacks.
Activate: Swings Glaive's axe in a 5.4-meter circle, dealing massive area damage based on number of Bloodsong stacks used. This removes all stacks. Glaive also gains full stacks of Bloodsong whenever he dies.
Bloodsong stacks are very important to all that is Glaive. A Bloodsong stack is gained when you basic attack anything, Your Twisted Strikes do also count as a stack, or when you’re a victim of a basic attack from an enemy hero. For the most part, when you know there will be a team fight you shouldn't attack unless you have all 20 stacks. It’s not something that will lose you the team fight if you don’t, but it will give you a big advantage if you do. The reason for this is because BloodSong Stacks provide Glaive with Lifesteal.
I have mentioned that you get increased lifesteal per stack, but another reason that it is important to manage your stacks is because the damage of the ability is based on the amount of stacks that you have when you activate the ability. As a result, you should remember that when you activate this ability all 20 stacks are consumed and you will start back at 0. This does not mean to be afraid to use. If glaive is built properly or if your in a good team fight, those stacks will be maxed again before you even realize it.
When it comes to how I choose what abilities come first. My playstyle is more focused on his Glaives ability to crit and deal basic damage quickly. Therefore, I max out my B ability before A. I use my A as a Harassment tool. B and C are my bread and butter.
The next thing that I will discuss is the items in which I have picked to showcase. The list of items I have picked are:
SorrowBlade
Tyrant's Monocle
Tornado Trigger
Serpent Mask
Journey Boots
Atlas Pauldrons
Aegis
Metal Jacket
Fountain of Renewal
The reason I choice the items is because of how well they allow glaive to both deal damage and synergize with his abilities. Sorrowblade is a must because of the +150 weapon power that is adds to basic attacks. Glaive is a basic attack hero and therefore must be built with items that synergize with that. Tornado Trigger is also a must have because of the attack speed that it gives as well as the critical strike chance. When its just the tornado trigger and your B ability you are already stacked at 45% critical chance. Most of the time that will calculate to be about every other attack is a critical hit. Then, we have the Tyrants Monocle. This is also a must have because it pairs well with the tornado trigger. It adds an additional 40% critical hit chance, which is 85% just an FYI, but it also adds critical damage. This means that the damage your critical hits is amplified by 40% of the basic attack (when paired with Tornado Trigger). It also adds Weapon Damage which is a plus. Now, we have the serpents mask. This item is very well used with Glaive because it awards you with 10% Lifesteal that stacks with your C ability but it also awards you with more +75 weapon damage. It is money well spent. Boots, well they are self explanatory, they allow you to move around fast and get out of situations that may overall get you dead. The last thing is defense items. As well all know, the defense that you build is all situational. Usually it depends on your mirrored hero or the enemys' jungle hero. If you are fighting an enemy hero who thrives on Weapon Power andAtk Speed than you should build an Atlas since it allows you to slow their atk and protects from damage. If faced with a Weapon Power heavy hitter with a slower atk speed than I would go for the Metal Jacket. It doesn't allow the ability to Slow the Attack speed of the enemy but you do get a lot more protection from it. Finally, is the Aegis and Fountain. These two items are best suited to protect from Crystal Power Heroes. The fountain is a good item if your playing against a team that doesn't quite understand who they should target first and end up trying to kill your roamer and not you. THe fountain allows good health regen and can save your life in a team fight. (if used properly and at the right time). Aegis is basically a reflex block but with Crystal Defense.
Now, on to the build order. There are many order in which you can purchase your items. I haven't really found a wrong build order but I have found that the most efficient, for me, is to rush the serpent mask. The lifesteal really helps not only with farming but in team fights as well. Once you have your serpent mask and boots built, I usually buy the Tier 2 items for both the Tornado Trigger and the Tyrants Monocle. Then all you have to do is save the gold to buy the Tier 3 items. Once you have both of those you just have to worry about building your sorrowblade which is quite easy depending on how well you and your team are at farming your jungle and possibly your enemies (if you play aggressive enough). The question most are going to ask is, "when do I build defense"? the answer to this is not an easy one, in my opinion. I usually only build defense if I becoming an easy kill or what we call "feeding" the enemy. If you begin to die a lot and feed the enemy heroes than its time to build defense. If you are a person who likes having defense earlier than it is unheard of to build defense within the first 5 or 6 minutes of the game. It just means that, if your rushing a serpent mask or tornado trigger, it will take longer to build those Tier 3 items. Overall, having that early defense can help so it is up to your play style.
