Introduction Top
Catherine is an amazing hero, and by far one of my favorites. Catherine is a sustained and very aggressive tank, which is why it's very important to play her with some amount of damage. From my experience, a Catherine player needs just enough damage to pressure and harass the enemy, but not so much that utility and HP will be sacrificed. Don't be afraid to be up in the enemies' faces.
Stormguard allows you to be a lot more aggressive, and
Merciless Pursuit and
Blast Tremor can cause a large amount of disruption, delaying their reactions and potentially forcing them out of position. With this hero, do not be afraid to engage alone occasionally. Engaging alone right before a team fight can waste the enemies cooldowns and Energy, as well as hurting them with Stormguard.
Always Use Stormguard at the start of a fight, and
Never stay engaged for too long while alone. Be sure to back off frequently, then come back again if it's safe. The worst thing for your team would be you dying right before a team fight. Catherine is a vital part of the fight!
Chasing enemies Top
I've seen far too many Catherine players just walk up to, basic attack a fleeing enemy, then repeat the process. What you want to do is use Merciless Pursuit to close the gap, move in front of them while it's still active, and stun them. Then use Stormguard and walk as if you were running away from THEM. When you are far enough away that when you basic attack they won't be able to get past you immediately, attack, then repeat this process. This way you'll make sure that they don't get past you. If you're chasing with an ally, the enemy wouldn't be able to go backwards either, because that would mean getting cornered by your teammate.
Blast Tremor can help kill secure if necessary, but
never use it to kill steal. You aren't the carry, they need the experience more than you. Only use Blast Tremor to kill a fleeing enemy if you're certain that they would escape otherwise. If you can ever give the kill to you're carry when chasing an enemy together, give it to them. Sometimes, if you have someone who is already catching up to a fleeing enemy, you'll want to stun and damage the enemy so your ally can get the kill quickly enough so the enemy team doesn't come to help, or so the chase doesn't enter dangerous enemy territory.
Itemization Top
Looking at the situational item list, you're probably very confused, so allow me to elaborate:
Tension Bow: Use this in place of Sorrowblade when you're team needs a bit more burst, or if the enemy's armor is becoming a problem.
Shatterglass: If you're team already has more than enough WP, use this instead of Sorrowblade.
Alternating Current: If you have another tanky ally on you're team, use this instead of Metal Jacket, but only if you're building CP.
Aegis: Use this if the enemy has more CP. Replace Metal Jacket with this.
Atlas Pauldron: Use this in place of Metal Jacket if the enemy has very high attack speed.
Eve of Harvest: Use this in place of Sorrowblade if you need more sustain.
Aftershock: Use this like you would use alternating current, or in place of Sorrowblade if you want more cooldown reduction (Not Suggested).
Stormcrown: Use in place of Metal Jacket if your damage just isn't pressuring the enemy enough. You're passive will usually give you the armor that you need.
War Treads: Use these in place of Halycon Chargers if you feel necessary. Be warned that Catherine exhausts Energy quickly, and may need a separate Energy item to play with these boots.
Catherine's Passive Top
Captain of the Guard is an amazing perk and you should always look for opportunities to use this in. When it's safe, try to get stuns off on enemies during the early laning phase, and when roaming, it's useful to stun single wandering enemies for that passive effect. Know when to disengage after using this. Committing to a fight at the wrong time can turn an okay situation into a highly dangerous one.
Also, using blast tremor on the entire enemy team is a great way to gain perk stacks and delay their assault.
Scout Traps Top
Catherine is a very mobile Captain, so using Contraption to place Scout Traps is very easy. Usually, You'll want to trap brushes that your enemies hide in frequently, but there are some other ways to use these traps. Allow me to introduce: The Death Square. The Death Square (as I call it) consists of the 4 brushes in the center of the map. 2 are on either side of the Kraken/Gold Mine area, and the other two are on either side of the central lane area. These parallel brushes seem to make a sort of square shape, which is why I named them The Death Square. What does this have to do with death? Well, if you don't trap these brushes, you will die. I have observed that ganks and sneak attacks happen very frequently in these brushes, so they are a major objective. If you feel necessary, you can also trap the brushes close to the jungle shop, to catch shopping enemies. you also don't necessarily need to place traps in brushes alone. Placing them along the paths between brushes or near the enemy territory can help establish strategic vision, instead of purely protecting against ganks.
Well that's about it. I hope you enjoyed reading the guide.
