Hello! My name is Ccool11 and I am here to help people master Ardan. Ardan is a protector roam and is very good at getting teammates out of tight spaces. This build will be all about how to help teammates, keeping in mind that you will have very little gain yourself in order to improve that of your team. Please read this text for details because just looking at the build isn't detailed enough to help you win.
Beginning of Game Top
Start with the classic
Ironguard Contract and 2
Halcyon Potions.
If you have a squishy lane, you may want to go with them. For the most part though, try to go with your jungler. Make sure to try and let your jungler get last hits, as it is very crucial for them. Put a camp to low health and move to the next one, staying in range of the contract. After 1-2 clears of jungle, go to lane for a while (contract saps XP from your jungler, you want to let them have as much as possible.) If you get your
Blood for Blood first and do one clear, then have the laner kill one minion, you will hit 2 and are able to upgrade your
Vanguard. If you need to go up early because laner is having trouble, do so. This guide is all about helping and protecting teammates even at the cost of your gold, XP, K/D ratio, etc.
Item Building (Mid Game) Top
All except one (or two depending) item(s) on this build have active abilities. Knowing how to use them are crucial and can save your life. After your do your 1-2 clears w/ jungle and have been in lane for a while, go shop (in jungle shop unless absolutely impossible.) Get a Warhorn because this will give you extra health for tanking, and its active is one of the most valuable in this build. For those who don't know, Warhorn passive lets you and all nearby allies gain movement speed for a limited time. It is like
Journey Boots but for your whole team. Use these to help allies run from fights, or to catch up to fleeing enemies. After, build a
Shiversteel. This will help secure ally kills and definitely help out a lot. Not only does it give extra health just like Warhorn but it lets you slow opponents. Now you can slow opponents and speed allies. Plus using abilities you can also punch enemies and speed allies even more! Now is where the build splits based on the game. If your enemies are killing you or allies a lot and need to be stopped, build
Metal Jacket to counter weapon or
Aegis to counter crystal. If you are facing a
Krul or
Taka building huge amounts of attack speed, you may want to consider an
Atlas Pauldron instead of the
Metal Jacket. It gives you a little less armor, however, its active can be valuable. When used, this item slows attack speed of nearby enemies like CRAZY. This can be used to kill
Krul,
SAW,
Taka and anyone else that has too much. I would try to get this unless you see absolutely no attack speed built on the enemy team.
Item Building (Late Game) Top
Unless you see NO crystal or NO weapon on the enemy team (they are all building the same type like noobs) get both
Aegis and an armor item. After you have built your
Aegis and one of the two armor items above, continue. If you haven't already, build yourself
Journey Boots. You should now have 5 items. Assuming you already looked above, you may be wondering why I build a Serpent's Mask as a support. Even though this seems weird, it helps immensely. You are already VERY tanky, and now you can earn it back. The lifesteal will almost guarantee that you will not die, and because of this you and your 3 abilities and 4-5 items are all there to help. Plus, it gives you an attack boost. You don't want too much attack as a support because your teammates are supposed to be getting the kills. However, you don't want to be completely useless attack wise. The Serpent's Mask lets you get some attack so if you are snuck up on or chased, you are able to at least fight a little. Remember, always try to travel with a teammate. Even with Serpent's Mask Ardan's attack is still pretty weak because he isn't meant for it. Unless you see a golden opportunity, you shouldn't be taking any kills all game.
Things to watch out for Top
Like every hero,
Ardan has strengths and weaknesses. There are some things you will probably do no matter what, but should really be careful about.
1. Using
Vanguard to help a teammate gain speed is great, but sometimes people forget it also does damage. If your teammate is chasing a low enemy, use Warhorn instead to avoid stealing the kill.
2. Do
not get overconfident in your health. Remember, even if you are the tankiest champ in the game (which you aren't because of
Phinn), you can still fall. Sure, you can tank 2-3 hits from a turret. You cannot tank the entire turret at max health. This isn't hard, just be aware of your health. You can soak a few hits from an enemy, but don't just stand there, run!
3. If it is between you or your teammates death, die for them. This is especially crucial due to the fact that your teammates will have high bounties towards the end and will reward the team a lot for killing them.
4. Use your items wisely. Unlike most champs where ability cooldowns are their demise,
Ardan is the opposite. Because he uses power, and is tanky, you won't really find yourself waiting for an ability too much. However, items are about 90% of this build, meaning if they are all out, you are very screwed. Be conservative, and try to think of the best way of using an item or resource, or if there is an alternative to what you want to use.
Strategies and Things to do Top
1. Sometimes, if it seems hopeless for you and an ally, you may be able to both escape anyways. For example, you and an ally are both in jungle running away from an enemy. If you shield yourself, your ally dies and if you shield your ally, you die (which you should if you have to.) However, you can take advantage of
Ardan's leap, and dive to your ally. Split up with your ally, and get the attacker to follow you. Then, jump over the jungle camp barrier to your teammate and run! This has gotten me out of many situations.
2. 3v3 Combat - Start by shielding a teammate into battle. This helps them reduce damage taken (when everyone is using abilities), gives them extra movement speed, and does a little damage to enemies. Next use
Gauntlet to trap all enemies inside. Punch an enemy (2nd ability.) Then, activate your
Atlas Pauldron if you have one. This will reduce all attack speed, and because teams tend to fight side by side, you will hopefully hit all 3 of them. If you see hurt allies, shield them (hopefully your shield is cooled down by now.) If you see your allies are both low, use your Warhorn to escape. Once both allies are safe, jump back using
Blood for Blood and use your
Shiversteel Try to hit all 3. If you take damage from this, use your
Vanguard and
Aegis to protect yourself and hit them. Then use
Journey Boots to run away.
3. Securing Kraken - One great way of securing Kraken is Ardan's
Gauntlet. Simply wait until kraken is very low, then ult. Unless the enemy team has a
Phinn the enemy no longer has a way of attacking kraken and you can take it. (Keep in mind, ranged characters may still be able to land basics or abilities like
Celeste's
Heliogenesis.
