Introduction Top
Hello, my name is minddrag and I have been playing video-games for about 10 years now. By no means am I a pro gamer, but I am fairly experienced at gaming. I am top ranked in numerous games and am a contender for the top spot in many other games. I only came to vainglory fairly recently, and I am loving the game so far. The reason I feel that I am qualified to create an in-depth lance guide is because I have created many other build in the games that I have played, making me one of the most respected builders in Eldevin, Wartune, Pockie Saints, SWTOR, and Destiny. Enough about me, I will now fully explain all of lances abilities and the reason's behind the build. Please go easy on me as this is my first build, and I will continue to update it and work on it. Please leave comments about how to make things more aesthetically pleasing or smoother.
The build is not completely done yet, I still have to add tips and tricks, along with a few different stratgy video's. Stay tuned for lane lance also :)
About Lance Top
With his unique polearm-and-shield combat style,
Lance breaks enemy lines and creates opportunities for allies. Lance can build crystal or utility items to excel in his role as a protector, or he can build weapon items to deal more damage during battle.
As of right now,
Lance is primarily played as a Roamer in a protector style.
Lance is arguably one of the tankiest roamers thanks to his
Gythian Wall, which allows him to reduce damage from the targets direction by 20% plus 10% crystal. He is also able to block all detrimental effects from that target direction when active. I need to do more testing but I believe that it also wards off some detrimental effects with the passive from
Gythian Wall because I was able to walk through
Ardan
Gauntlet without a reflex block.
Although not Meta at the moment, I beleive that lance could be played effectivly as a laner due to his
Partisan's Technique. This is due to the fact that his basic attacks would hit all the minions in a line, and that he can easily defend from laners such as
Ringo or
Skaarf. After I have completed this build, I will add another chapter detailing
Lance as a laner. Now on the the abilities.
Lance's Abilities Top
|
|
Partisan's Technique
Lance's basic attacks damage every target along their path. However, his attacks are slow to land and attack speed is less effective on him.
Instead of energy, Lance uses stamina to activate his abilities. Purchasing items with energy and energy regeneration increases his stamina and stamina regeneration.
Max Stamina: 100 + 20% Max Energy
Stamina Regen: 15+50% Energy Regen
|
This ability is very important because it is
Lance's backbone in team-fights. Make sure to line your enemies up or group them together to get the most of your auto attacks. I would suggest building an
Aftershock,
Breaking Point or a
Bonesaw as your last item, so that when you hit multiple hero's you get the most out of your auto attacks.
|
|
Impale
Lance strikes through his opponents, dealing weapon damage and rooting them in place (max 1.6 seconds). If this attack hits at least one enemy, Lance will immediately recover from the ability.
Overdrive: If this hits an enemy, it also resets the cool-down of Combat Roll.
|
Impale has a very long range so it is very good for ganking with
Lance. Do not use
Impale (even with its long jump range) to escape from enemies because its recovery is much longer then the time it would take to run that distance, especially with boots. If you need to escape, or hit a target that is a possible miss, make sure to aim for a minion so that it does not waste time on recovery.
|
|
Gythian Wall
Passive: Lance strafes around the enemy he has most recently attacked. While strafing, he reduces damage from the target's direction by up to 50%.
Active: Lance sweeps opponents away with his polearm, dealing weapon damage and also stunning them if they collide with a wall or structure (max 1.6 seconds). Afterward, he holds his shield steadfast, greatly reducing incoming damage from the target direction by up to 90%.
Both the passive and the active damage reduction are 50% effective against turrets.
Overdrive: While active, Lance ignores all debuffs (from any direction).
|
Gythian Wall is the backbone of
Lance's roaming ability. The passive allows for great stutter stepping (if you do not know how to stutter step or do not know what it is watch this
stutter stepping tutorial) and reduces damage while stutter stepping and fighting. Make sure to time
Gythian Wall properly to stop stuns, silences and other detrimental effects. Coupled with
Combat Roll you can maneuver yourself into the fray and protect your team. Also use
Gythian Wall when near a wall to stun enemy heroes or when your carry is being chased to repel the enemy.
|
|
Combat Roll
Lance rolls in the target direction. His next basic attack within 2 seconds will strike quickly, dealing bonus crystal damage.
|
This is
Lance's glue, it's what holds all his other abilities together.
Combat Roll allows lance to chase and run from enemies, and to position himself for effective snares and stuns.
Combat Roll has a very short cooldown so use it often!
Early to mid game Top
Like all roamers,
Lance should start off with an
Oakheart,
Halcyon Potion and than a
Flare Gun as soon as possible. If you have a strong early game jungler such as
Koshka,
Taka, or
Krul, descend to the jungle shop first and steal the enemies front minions and then rotate back through your own jungle. As you approach the jungle shop after clearing your jungle fire off the flare into the bushes near the enemy jungle to scout out the enemies, and then shop. First shop I would recommend a
Scout Trap and
Light Shield.
For mid game I would suggest getting to a
Fountain of Renewal as fast as possible because it is the roamers main item. I would suggest picking up
Sprint Boots as soon as possible as lance is naturally slow.
Mid to Late game Top
During mid to late game, your enemies ultimate's come into play. I would suggest getting
Travel Boots for the extra help, and grabbing that cruciblel as fast as possible. Complete your
Fountain of Renewal if you haven't already. Depending on your enemies, I would suggest maybe not getting the
Crucible as fast, and focusing on that
Atlas Pauldron especially against
Krul, WP
Taka,
SAW and
Glaive.
Late Game Top
You should have your
Crucible,
Atlas Pauldron and
Fountain of Renewal finished by now. You can now pick between building your
Contraption or
War Treads. You should have your
Contraption and
War Treads completed before going for your final item.
How to Pick that Final Item Top
There are 6 final items to choose from when playing this
Lance build. You can pick an
Aftershock,
Frostburn,
Shiversteel,
Contraption,
Bonesaw and
Breaking Point. Each of these items are highly situational, so I will go into when you should use each one.
Aftershock:
Lance should build an
Aftershock when facing one or multiple enemies with high health. Make sure to look at the builds of your carries before building an aftershock, if it is covered by both of them, do not take
Aftershock, unless the hero with high HP is extremely powerful.
Frostburn:
Lance should build a
Frostburn when the enemy team is extremely slippery, such as a sky or a
Ringo.
Frostburn will take effect after your roll and should slow the enemy retreat. Apply
Frostburn to the most agile carry, but auto attack after roll and then use your
Gythian Wall or
Impale.
Shiversteel:
Lance should build a
Shiversteel when his carries have a large amount of dps and when the enemy team is extremely slippery, such as a sky or a
Ringo.
Shiversteel's slow is much more then the slow of
Frostburn so it can be used in the same way as the
Frostburn with the same rules.
Shiversteel should be used to slow the enemy retreat. Apply
Shiversteel to the most agile carry, but use it after your
Gythian Wall and
Impale.
Contraption:
Lance should build a
Contraption when faced with a hero who can pull insane damage when inside a bush that is facechecked such as a
Reim or a
Phinn.
Lance should also build a
Contraption when faced with a stealth hero such as a
Taka or a
Kestrel. This is to put down
Scout Trap in bushes or fire off
Flare Gun to check bushes instead of face-checking or to find a
Taka or a
Kestrel when stealthed.
Bonesaw:
Lance should build a
Bonesaw when he is playing along side melee dmg carries such as a
Krul,
Ringo or a
SAW. or if you are playing against heavily armored roamers such as a
Phinn or a
Catherine The
Bonesaw when applied with
Lance's heroic perk
Partisan's Technique allows
Lance to shred armor from all three opponents with one auto-attack! This is a huge advantage for your team, and should not be taken lightly.
Breaking Point:
Lance should build a
Breaking Point when you feel like he is not doing enough damage, or the carries are not WP but you are still fighting against heavily armored enemies, such as
Phinn or
Catherine.
Breaking Point will allow lance to greatly increase his auto-attack power in a short time due to the fact that he will hit all enemies in a line, and apply
Breaking Point stacks a lot faster then normal.
Teammate Reccomendations Top
Lance can play will with high risk/high reward heroes such as
Reim,
Celeste. I will now show you a complete list of the best teammates for lance and explain why they are good together.
The first, and probably the best teammate for
Lance has got to be
Reim. With
Lance's
Impale,
Reim can land his
Winter Spire, land his
Chill Winds, another
Winter Spire, and then his
Valkyrie. If this combo is done while
Lance is attacking the enemy hero, they are bound to fall.
The nest teammate for
Lance has got to be
Skye. Once
Lance lands him
Impale then
Skye can directly unload her
Death From Above and follow up with a
Suri Strike and a
Forward Barrage. This is an extremely damaging combo, which is bound to kill one to two heroes if used correctly.
Another great team up for
Lance has got to be
Celeste.
Lance starts off with his
Impale followed up by
Celeste's
Heliogenesis. Then
Celeste can use her
Core Collapse and then explode her
Heliogenesis. If the enemy is not dead by then then
Celeste can use her
Solar Storm or
Lance can
Impale again or use his
Gythian Wall. This again, is an instant death.
Another great combo with
Lance and a teammate is
Skaarf. Using
Skaarf's
Goop and
Spitfire along with
Lance's
Impale will almost be a 1 hit kill.
The final OP teammate combination is between
Lance and
Joule. As shown in the
Vainglory Hero Spotlight for
Lance the
Impale coupled with the
Big Red Button thunderstrike or even
Joule's
Rocket Leap can be landed after a successful
Impale.
Keep in mind that during all of these combo's both
Lance and his teammate are attacking the enemy hero.
Tips and Tricks Top
Situational Awareness:
First off as
Lance you need to have situational awareness. If your
Skaarf is charging his
Dragon Breath its a good idea not to use your
Gythian Wall and knock the enemies towards your
Skaarf. Instead
Lance should use his
Impale and root the enemies so they cannot run from
Skaarf's
Dragon Breath.
Unless the enemies are running away your
Gythian Wall should almost always be used to knock the enemies away from your carries. This said, use your common sense. If there is a wall nearby use your
Gythian Wall to stun the enemies. Don't knock your ranged enemies away from your melee carry lie
Krul so that he cannot stack up and gets kited.
Positioning:
The nest thing lance must have to work properly is positioning. Lance is a character that relies heavily on positioning. Make sure to line up all your enemy heroes so that
Lance's
Partisan's Technique will hit all of them. make sure to use
Lance's
Combat Roll to move faster around the map, not to mention rolling through some walls for faster escapes and chases. Use the
Combat Roll after your
Impale to get behind them and
Gythian Wall the enemy team back to your carries in a chase or away in an escape.
Roaming:
As I am not primarily a roamer and am only learning how to roam myself, I cannot, with a clear conscience give roaming advice, but I will redirect you to , which has a great roaming tutorial.
Conclusion Top
Overall lance is by far the tankiest hero if used correctly. Lance can be played both roam and lane to a high degree of effectiveness. Lance requires a high degree of practice and skill to use effectively and his play-style is not for everyone. Make sure to experiment with different builds in different situations and contact me if you have any comments or questions. Thank you for reading and go shatter that vain!
