Introduction Top
Hello and welcome to this
Ardan guide! As I'm primarily an Ardan main and have been playing him for a while now, I've decided to create a detailed guide to help other players with him. Ardan's abilities are able to swing the outcome of fights into his favor. He is strong paired up with almost any hero and is an incredibly flexible pick who can take a hit, dish it out and be able to get both himself and his allies out of trouble.
By the end of this guide, I hope you learned something new, and see if Ardan is the right hero for you.
P.S. This is my first build guide, feel free to correct me on typos/factual errors or comment if I should add anything.
Perk: Julia's Gift Top
Ardan heals for a percent of his missing health every time he takes damage. Additionally, Ardan uses a unique energy source called Vengeance, regenerating over time and more quickly attained by basic attacks. Because he does not use energy, a portion of cooldown acceleration and/or bonus energy are converted to crystal power.
Ardan's healing makes him very durable against damage-over-time heroes like
Skaarf as he can heal away most of the damage taken. He can bodyblock abilities that deal this kind of damage such as
Skye's
Forward Barrage.
A: Vanguard Top
Vanguard allows Ardan to dash to a nearby ally, giving them a speed boost and a barrier, additionally damaging nearby enemies and slowing them. If the ally takes damage while
Vanguard is on them, Ardan gains vengeance. However, if Ardan casts this ability on himself, the speed boost, vengeance gain and barrier are only half as powerful. Upgrades on this ability increase the strength of the barrier while reducing its cooldown, and the overdrive increases the casting range as well as giving Ardan a small amount of vengeance when used on an ally. I recommend learning
Vanguard at level 1 and taking its overdrive first if played as a protector, or taking the overdrive second if played as a heavier damage support.
The barrier scales with Ardan's bonus health. When built with health items like
Crucible and
War Treads, this barrier becomes incredibly strong and can negate a lot of damage from a fight.
Vanguard is useful with any hero, but is especially helpful when paired up with allies who can initiate eg.
Glaive,
Ozo or need to stick near their targets eg.
Krul,
Reim as it gives them both a speed boost to chase down an enemy and a health barrier to block any incoming burst damage.
An important mechanic of
Vanguard often overlooked is that Ardan gains vengeance when the ally with
Vanguard on them takes damage. Not only the ally benefits from a well-provided
Vanguard, but Ardan is also rewarded. With some health items to boost up the barrier strength, Ardan's
Blood for Blood can come off cooldown multiple times from a single
Vanguard, dramatically increasing his damage output if built with damage items like
Aftershock.
Vanguard, in some cases, can also be used for its other effects. If an enemy ignores Ardan to chase an ally, he can cast the ability on himself to slow them down. With some extra crystal power from an
Aftershock,
Stormcrown or
Contraption, Ardan can also clear minion waves well, casting
Vanguard on himself for large area-of-affect damage.
Vanguard is also helpful for Ardan in a few ways. If he needs an escape, he can dash away from danger to an ally. As stated before, using
Vanguard effectively can reduce Ardan's
Blood for Blood cooldown. He can also use
Vanguard through obstacles.
Vanguard does not require vengeance to use, which means Ardan should use this ability as frequently as possible when not in teamfights.
B: Blood for Blood Top
Blood for Blood can only be used when Ardan's Vengeance bar is full. It allows him to dash to a nearby enemy for an extra-powerful basic attack, dealing both weapon and crystal damage. Upgrades increase the damage of this ability, and the overdrive increases
Blood for Blood's range. I recommend learning this ability at level 2, taking its overdrive first if playing Ardan as a damage support, or taking it second if playing as a protector.
Because
Blood for Blood counts as a basic attack-reset, on-hit effect items work with this ability such as
Aftershock, giving Ardan even more burst damage from
Blood for Blood.
If chasing an enemy,
Blood for Blood can be used to close the gap before slowing the enemy with
Vanguard.
With some vision on the map, Ardan can use
Blood for Blood to bypass obstacles
Attack speed items can be useful for regaining vengeance quickly to use
Blood for Blood more times during a fight.
Ultimate: Gauntlet Top
When Ardan uses his ultimate,
Gauntlet, he leaps to a selected location nearby, projecting a large perimeter around him and gaining full vengeance. Enemies that attempt to cross the perimeter are stunned for crystal damage for 1 second, giving Ardan vengeance. Upgrades of
Gauntlet increase the duration of the perimeter and damage from the stun. I only recommend taking Ardan's ultimate to level 2 in favor of the range boosts the overdrives of
Vanguard and
Blood for Blood give.
Gauntlet is best used to trap and separate enemies from each other.
Gauntlet has strong synergy with heroes who are not mobile and need to keep enemies near them, such as
SAW. Separate the carries from their captain to make quick work of them.
Smarter enemies will try to
Reflex Block their way out of the perimeter's stun. Try to enclose an enemy with
Gauntlet, but land the ultimate so the wall is as close to the enemy as possible. This can help cause disorientation.
Because
Gauntlet grants Ardan full vengeance, using
Blood for Blood just before he activates his ultimate will allow Ardan to use it again afterwards for extra damage. Stunning an enemy with
Gauntlet also gives Ardan vengeance, allowing him to quickly get to an enemy using
Blood for Blood if they attempt to escape.
While leaping/channeling
Gauntlet, beware of stuns or obstacles. The former will cancel the perimeter, and the latter can affect where Ardan lands and where the perimeter actually forms.
Don't be afraid to use
Gauntlet defensively. If the whole enemy team still decides to charge through the ultimate, Ardan's
Blood for Blood can be used to get the enemy team to fall back or to even swing the tide of the battle back.
Ardan's
Gauntlet can cross the wall if attempting to backdoor, though this is not recommended if Ardan is alone and the enemy team is not already distracted.
Conclusion Top
Ardan is an incredibly flexible and mobile hero. With
Vanguard, he can protect his teammates and get himself and allies out of a bad situation. With
Blood for Blood and
Gauntlet, he can become a damage dealer, able to chase down enemies and secure kills.
Thanks for reading my guide on Ardan, try him out if you haven't already, and I wish you best of luck.
