As SAW this may come naturally, but you want to sit within easy walking range to your turret. At this state you may be at your weakest, but so is everyone else! Do not try to pursue enemies, however you should not be intimidated out of standing your ground. Against Weapon based enemies such as Ringo or another SAW, you want to instantly change your target to them when they start to get to close. This should award you with free hits while hopefully harassing them out of last hitting minions. Do not try and extend past the middle of the lane unless you have full team support, even then you won't get a lot of progress. Personally I recommend starting with the book and then buying a Heavy Steel. After you finish your Serpent's Mask, immediately begin to try and stay in the lane as long as you can without risking your life. This will buy you precious time to farm while the enemy goes back for items. I usually go back when I have enough to buy the Heavy Steel outright, and then go back for the Sorrow Blade. Once you finish your offensive beginning, the tables will slowly turn with how you choose your fights.
As you progress into your third item, many will find that buying the lowest tier boots is quite beneficial. While I don't, I don't recommend ignoring a try at buying the boots and moving onto the next two items. With your Sorrow Blade and Serpent's Mask complete, SAW can stand toe to toe with many weapon based Heroes. However, around this time is when the mages and assassins begin to really become a threat, and thus need to be shut down. The first item you need to buy is a Reflex block, followed by a shield to build into an Aegis. It should keep you in the game longer against mages and assassins, but don't get cocky against your natural counters. It's around the time you buy your Dragon Heart that you can really begin to push the fight to the enemy, your sheer health helping drastically in long ranged fights against prestige mages. Remember this though, a build is only one third of what you need to succeed. It can only carry you so far without the experience and practice to back it up, and thus shouldn't be the reason you think you can tackle a mage. It is always safer to request back up or try and stick near your team at these darker times. Once you have acquired the godly Crucible, you can finally work towards the last pieces of your build. A Bonesaw is one of the final pieces, making the build truly powerful against even the longest slap fests. Your boots will finally allow you the privilege to chase down and execute targets that run from you. After that, it's more a matter of improving the build where necessary, never be afraid to alter your build. No two scenarios will be the same, and no two builds should really be the same. In the end, this should be a fun fall back though.
