Introduction Top
Heya! I'm MrTouchnGo, a longtime Vainglory player. I was formerly Vainglorious and am currently Simply Amazing (as of 11/19/2015). This is actually my first guide, inspired by my guildmates who have been asking me how to play and build Petal. I've been playing her a lot in Ranked and seeing some great success. I hope this guide is helpful!
Skill distribution Top
At level 1, you, of course, get your A.
Level 2, it's kind of a toss-up. Against certain heroes such as
Glaive,
Taka,
Skye,
Krul, and
Koshka, your jump doesn't help a whole lot, so it's better to put your second point in your A for more damage. It may seem like the trampoline will help you escape from Taka and Koshka, but the reality is that if they're on top of you, they tend to catch up post-jump very easily. Unless Glaive uses his Afterburn to knock you into a wall directly next to him, you will have a very easy time kiting that cat. Unless Krul hits you with the slow on his passive, you should easily be able to take him out.
Against
Rona or
Vox in jungle, you should probably get your Trampoline. Rona has good gap closers, but she doesn't have a passive speed boost like Koshka, Taka, or Skye. Once her gap closers are used, she won't catch up if you jump away. You'll catch up to Vox more easily with Trampoline. Additionally, against
Ardan and a melee (any melee), consider getting your jump. If the melee is on top of you and Ardan Vanguards them and slows you, you'll want that jump to get out of there.
At level 5, you should actually skip that point.
Do not put a point into your B. Instead, put one point into your ultimate at level 6, and the second point into your A. This is
far better than a point into your B at level 5.
After that, finish off your A and your ultimate, with the rest of the points in your B. Ez pz.
Early Game Top
Pick up a
Crystal Bit as your first item, along with a potion and a flare. A Crystal Bit will speed up your jungle clear. Use your flare on the enemy shop bush once you are down there. If they are there as well, use that vision to poke them.
At first shop, you should be able to purchase one 300g item. Typically this should be another
Crystal Bit, for additional early game power. An exception would be
Sprint Boots, if the enemy bought them.
Petal's early game is very strong with additional Crystal Power. You should easily be able to bully most junglers. Rona, Skye, and Koshka may give you trouble, but not too many other heroes. Use this to your advantage - push the enemy and steal as much of their farm as possible to give you a gold advantage that you can use to snowball the game.
Next time you shop, you should have enough for a third Crystal Bit and
Sprint Boots. If you're against an Assassin or Rona, I would consider building a Tier 1 Defensive item instead of a third Crystal Bit - generally
Light Armor or
Light Shield, depending on who you are playing against.
After that, you want to maximize the amount of Crystal Power you have at any given time. To this end, since you are either rushing
Shatterglass or
Frostburn, upgrade one Crystal Bit into
Eclipse Prism and one into
Heavy Prism as soon as these upgrades are available. Unless you can upgrade to the T3 item or are very very close to doing so, upgrade the third Crystal Bit into a
Heavy Prism when you are shopping.
Mid Game Top
There isn't much to say here. By now you should almost have your first T3 item. If you are against an assassin or Rona, after (or sometimes even before) finishing your first T3, I would recommend upgrading your T1 Defense into the appropriate T2 defense. If you aren't against an assassin, continue on your way to your second T3 (usually
Broken Myth). It's usually good to buy
Travel Boots during or after your Broken Myth.
At this point, it should be easier to fight
Koshka. However, you should be careful against
Taka, because he does hit a big power spike at level 6.
If you are against
Glaive or
Ardan, or there is some other stun you absolutely need to block, buy a
Reflex Block!
Late Game Top
By now, you should have completed your core build. You're looking to build a third T3 item.
Against the clunkier melees, you should have
Shatterglass and
Broken Myth. If you are having no trouble surviving in teamfights, build into a Frostburn to make them even clunkier and slower. If you're having trouble surviving in teamfights, build some defense! I trust you know how to counterbuild.
Against the more mobile heroes, you should have
Frostburn and
Broken Myth. Awesome. Finish that T2 defense into a T3, or build a Shatterglass if you're not having any problem surviving.
Against Skye, build an
Alternating Current. I don't particularly like this item on Petal, because her munions are the damage dealers, but against Skye, your munions are typically evaporated very quickly. So I say: get AC! It'll give you some damage independent of your munions, which is great.
Shatterglass vs. Frostburn Top
A lot of people almost always rush Frostburn on Petal. While it's certainly a good item on her, I disagree with this choice.
Frostburn is extremely gold inefficient as far as paying for raw Crystal Power is concerned. Early game should be all about
securing farm, not teamfighting. Frostburn is great for securing kills against clunky heroes. However, raw power is far more useful early game for winning those teamfights early and mid-game. Therefore, I say Shatterglass in most cases. Raw CP converts to raw damage, which means better fights early, which means more farm! Yay farm!
Against heroes like Rona, Taka, Koshka, and Skye, however, Frostburn is useful as a first item because it will keep them at arm's length, giving you survivability.
By the time late game rolls around, that Frostburn will be instrumental in securing crucial aces that allow you to push. Every Petal build should probably include Frostburn. It's just a question of when.
General Teamfighting Tips Top
Teamfighting with Petal should consist of you poking, poking, poking, with your long range and munions. If you see an opportunity to get a kill safely, do not hesitate to commit with a trampoline
towards your enemy to secure that kill.
Often, the enemy melee will dive you. In this case, you should trampoline away from them, typically away from the teamfight as whole.
Don't forget to plant seeds as you retreat. Those seeds do a decent amount of damage when someone walks over them, and they also push enemies back, allowing you to kite better.
Be careful about using Petal's B in the middle of a teamfight, because this will call your munions back to you away from your target, when you would rather have your munions still chewing at your enemies' ankles.
When should you use your ultimate? If you're taking damage from a melee, use your ultimate for some burst heal and peel, since it slows enemies. Additionally, don't be afraid to use it to heal an ally and deal damage to whoever they are attacking/being attacked by.
Try not to fight without your ultimate late game! That thing is literally a gamechanger!
Because this build tends to be glass cannon,
be careful with your positioning! I cannot stress that enough! Positioning is key on Petal, and being caught an inch too far forward can mean a lost teamfight.
As you're taking objectives, you can plant seeds to build a "wall" or "barricade" to slow down your enemy. I love those seeds!
Team Compositions with Jungle CP Petal Top
Ardan and
Catherine are the best supports for Petal by far. I think Cath is slightly better in general because her reliable CC makes up for your lack of CC. However, Ardan is still a good pick, especially if he has synergy with your laner.
Adagio and
Fortress don't do a whole lot, and
Phinn is pretty meh.
Petal tends to work with a somewhat tanky ally. The reason behind this is that your heal is pretty useless if you have an ally that is deleted in half a second by the enemy team. It's much easier to heal an ally that can take some punishment before dying, simply because you're able to heal them for a longer window!
With this in mind, I see the best results with Petal with melee laners. Specifically,
Glaive and
Rona. While
Joule is great in lane, she tends to build glass cannon and can suffer from the same squishiness as a ranged hero.
Blackfeather is also a decent ally, but he also can be squishy, depending on how he is built.
And that's the end! Top
