First, I'm not a pro. I'm a casual player who likes to play a couple games at a time and just have a good time. This build is surprisingly tanky and is truly invincible in a 1v1 duel with another melee class (even
Lance) when played with any sort of skill. When I have two teammates that play their position and have even a shred of skill I will finish upwards of 15 kills with 1 or 2 deaths of any. You can even one-man the Kraken quickly while your teammates keep the opponents busy in the lane, which adds a wildcard to late-game. This build is very fun to play and can be mastered in a short amount of time. Enjoy!
I won't go into the basics of playing with
Krul in this build, but it is necessary to point out how this build MUST be played. The additional/adjustment items I talk about here should replace the
Poisoned Shiv in most cases.
MOVEMENT
I'm aware there are no boots. DON'T BUY BOOTS!
Krul has a movement perk from
Shadows Empower Me and you should use it... all the time. Move from bush to bush and stay hidden a lot. Remember that your target is slowed with your first strike so use it to engage. Don't buy boots. Because you don't have them, don't chase anyone either. You're easily kited so don't fall in that trap.
ENGAGING
Always open with the empowered strike/slow from
Shadows Empower Me but then remember that your basic attacks are the bread and butter. Don't blow your abilities unless needed. Most fights I get into I just stick to them and watch them die. My abilities are just to react to something they do.
If they are a glass cannon -- Meaning they do burst damage upfront, they can kill you. A
Slumbering Husk will help if you have two enemies like this, but generally you can engage then quickly pop
Dead Man's Rush to gain the shield. This will allow stacks of
Spectral Smite to build reducing their damage and getting your flow of incoming health started. If your enemies are getting the damage in from abilities, you can counter by picking up an
Aegis to reduce crystal damage.
If they try to run -- At some point your enemy will realize that your health is not dropping and that theirs is nearly gone. Generally, they try to run at that realization. No worries! You should have all of your abilities. First, use
Spectral Smite as soon as they disengage. This accomplishes two things: topping off your health and dealing a chunk of damage to help seal their fate. Usually this will finish your opponent. If not, follow up immediately with
Dead Man's Rush since it boosts your movement. While not a lot of damage, you'll get a few basic attacks in as well. If they are super slippery, you also have
From Hell's Heart to stun them and catch up. If you have several very slippery opponents, or all ranged, consider
Shiversteel to help stick on targets.
If they stack armor to counter you -- Get yourself another
Bonesaw to shred it. Not more than two total, though, because you will have 96% armor reduction at that point.
If they have a friend -- 2v1 is fun when you win, and you will often. They key is choosing your first target correctly. Pick the higher damage hero and melee over ranged. When you weaken them you'll minimize your incoming damage. Stick to them and down them. They generally won't run because they'll feel tough with a buddy. Make sure to pop
Spectral Smite as a last hit in order to gain some health for fighting your second round. Generally the second hero runs at this point, though.
If they get away/kite -- DON'T CHASE. Actually, turn around and find a bush and get empowered. If they have some health the may try to pursue you, thinking you retreated. Ambush them and pop an ability to do some quick damage. They will run again and not return because after two short encounters with you they will have very little health.
Early to Mid-Game
Stick to the jungle and clear camps. Always go to the farthest one first and stick with your roamer when they are in the jungle with you. You're a bit squishy early on until you take the overdrive on
Spectral Smite so avoid enemy heroes unless you have help. Don't bother with the shop until the jungle shop spawns.
Mid-Game
Control the jungle and harass the lane. Operate in the enemy jungle as much as your own. Keeping to the bushes and quickly dispatching camps. If the enemies are smart their jungler and roamer will begin to hunt you. Retreat as necessary, but snag kills when you can. Whenever opportune, or when you find their jungle empty and you've gotten behind their lane player, visit the lane and down them.
Late Game
Stick with your team. Not obviously with them, but nearby in the bushes and engage in team fights just after they start. Prioritize killing their carry, then the protector.
Once you've reached level 12 and have your core items, you are capable of downing the Kraken alone. If communicating with your team, have them harass the lane and keep attention while you do so. After releasing, down the crystal miner and get in position to escort the Kraken.
