I'm
Brad Chmielewski, the host of the weekly Vainglory podcast,
Shatter The Vain. I'm also one of the three hosts of the weekly podcast,
The Lane. Each and every week on The Lane we chat about MOBAs, game design, and share tips and things that we love between several MOBA games. I started playing Vainglory right before the North American launch. Catherine was the first hero that I felt like I understood and when played correctly could carry your team to victory. I primarily played Catherine in the early days and was able to quickly get to the Simply Amazing tier with her. Due to the stun bug and the hype around Ardan you saw Catherine sort of fall out of favor. Now with 1.4 and even more so with patch 1.5 she has returned as the best protector and support in the game.
Your Build Top
Why Aftershock? I often find that a small amount of damage on Catherine can go a long way. One crystal bit at the early level really can make your stormguard do some damage. Having the Aftershock later in the game can really help shutdown the enemy support / tank who is also likely building lots of health items.
Although I find this build to work pretty well at the moment, it's important to watch what the enemy is building and remain flexible. If you don't need the extra damage, skip the aftershock. If you're going against an all crystal team then the Atlas might not be the right purchase. If you can learn what to build for the right situation you'll be unstoppable.
Peeling & Disruption Top
Catherine's role is to cause as much trouble as she can and force the enemies to kill you instead of the carries on your team. If you died but your team was able to pick up the ACE it was all worth it. Be a bully! Don't be afraid to get up into someones face.
Setting up fights or getting enemies away from your allies is our job as Catherine. Catherine in my opinion is the best at this role because the low cooldown on her Merciless Persuit allows her to quickly stun whoever might be attacking your carry. Your goal as Catherine is to make sure you are always their to assist your carry. Use Merciless Persuit to quickly dash and stun an enemy, giving your allies room to re-position for the team fight.
This is particularly useful against characters who have huge ultimates that you need to shut down before they melt your entire team like Joule or Adagio.
Late in the game be sure to use your blast tremor to start off the fight. Being able to silence a team before they can activate a fountain of renewal or a stun will set your team up for the win.
