Skye Samuel can dodge Skye's abilities easily and has a higher damage output during a 1v1.

Skaarf When Skaarf begins to ult, Samuel can use his Oblivion to cancel Dragon's Breath.

Celeste Samuel is much stronger during the early and middle game. He can press his advantage to gain a lead over Celeste because he has a much longer range.

Lance Because of the passive from Gythian Wall, Lance can effectively body block Malice and Verdict. However, he will not be able to stop the basic attacks.

Blackfeather Once Blackfeather reaches level 6, he can use Rose Offensive to kite Samuel or even dodge his Oblivion.

Koshka When Koshka has her movement speed bonus, she is nearly impossible to hit with Malice and Verdict. Once she reaches Level 6, she can stun Samuel while her allies kill him.

Kestrel Kestrel has higher burst damage than Samuel from her Glimmershot ability and will kill Samuel in a 1v1.

Alpha Alpha is naturally tanky and has a second life from her heroic perk. This makes it really hard for Samuel to kill her.

Taka Taka can use his Kaku to get on top of Samuel before bursting him down with X-Retsu and Kaiten.

Krul When Krul applies his weakness stacks it will make it very hard for Samuel to stack Breaking Point. Krul can also regenerate life by using his Smite.

Hello! My name is Lechuan "VONC" Jiao. I have been playing since September 2014. I am currently the jungle player for Team SoloMid who are the current reigning Summer 2016 North American Champions. My highest achieved skill tier is Vainglorious Gold.

While Samuel is intended to be a mage that utilizes crystal power, this guide teaches how to build him using weapon power instead. Even though most players build crystal power on Samuel I have found that building weapon power is actually very strong and versatile.

The reason I think Samuel is effective when building weapon power is because he already has very high base crystal damage when using Malice & Verdict and Drifting Dark as well as having a very long range of attack (11 meters). This makes it difficult for enemies to counter build because Samuel will either do very high base crystal damage from his abilities, or have incredibly strong basic attacks from the weapon items he builds. Corrupted Genius also enables Samuel to sustain very well during fights from the health and energy regeneration.

Difficulty: MEDIUM (HIGH*)
Position: LANE (JUNGLE**)
Role: MAGE (SNIPER***)
*Building weapon on Samuel requires a higher skill level than the standard crystal build.
**I am the jungler for TSM and prefer to play Samuel in the jungle.
***By building weapon power on Samuel he should be classified as a Sniper with a similar playstyle as Ringo.


"Samuel is a dark mage who controls large areas with his abilities. Samuel is able to deal damage on the move, but he maybe caught out of position if played too aggressively. he is well suited in the lane, able to bully his victim while draining health and energy to sustain himself."

Corrupted Genius
Slot: Heroic Perk

Every 6s, Samuel's next basic attack fires a bolt of dark power that deals bonus crystal damage and draws health & energy back to Samuel.
  • Crystal Damage: 50-60 (level 1-12)
  • Healing: 10-120 (level 1-12) health
  • Recharge: 30-200 (level 1-12) energy
  • The restorative powers are only 25% as effective against non-heroes.


Using Corrupted Genius: Use it to heal yourself and save it for last hit when enemy is trying to steal your jungle. The increased burst of damage can catch enemies off guard.

Malice & Verdict
Slot: A

Samuel fires two bolts from his wands at a target location, impacting the first enemy hit. Samuel can move between the shots.

If Samuel is standing inside the energy field from Drifting Dark, these bolts move faster, travel farther and deal additional area damage. In addition, the cooldown is significantly reduced.
  • Empowered shots deal reduced damage to minions.


Malice & Verdict should almost always be used in conjunction with drifting darnkess. This will greatly increase the effectiveness of this ability providing maximum damage output. Alternating between using this ability and using basic attacks will deal a lot of damage to enemies standing in Samuel's path.

What to AVOID: Because Samuel will not have any energy regeneration from a weapon power build, it is important to conserve energy and use this ability efficiently. If a team fight is likely to occur, Samuel should ensure that he is preserving his energy for the fight rather than clearing the jungle.



Drifting Dark
Slot: B

Samuel creates a large field of darkness that slowly drifts forward, damaging enemies who stand inside it. If Samuel also stands inside, Malice & Verdict is greatly empowered and he heals for a small amount for each affected target.
  • The field will disappear if Samuel moves more than 16 meters away from it.
  • Deals 50% less damage to minions.


Using Drifting Dark: Drifting Dark is a very dynamic part of Samuel's kit.  This ability can be used both offensively and defensively.

- Offensively: Samuel should send his field of darkness towards the enemies. He can now begin to use Malice & Verdict as well as auto attacking and rush towards the enemy.

- Defensively: If the enemy is rushing towards Samuel and his allies, he can send his field of darkness backwards in an attempt to kite the enemies. He can begin to use his Malice & Verdict shots to kite the enemy team.


What to AVOID: Avoid using this ability when low on energy. It is essential that Samuel also has enough energy to also use this ability with Malice & Verdict


Oblivion
Slot: C

After a short delay, Samuel summons a phantasm at the target location, which puts nearby enemies to sleep. Enemies inflicted are unable to move or act.
  • Dealing direct damage to a sleeping enemy with an attack or ability will wake them up.


Using Oblivion: This is a really good ability to start a team fight or retreat. Oblivion has enough range to sleep enemy carry even they are behind their tank and you can also use Oblivion to save your teammates.

What to AVOID: Because Oblivion has a long cooldown, it is important to use this ability effectively. If using this ability to kite, it will be better to use it in between Samuel and the enemies (rather than directly on top of them) such that if they continue to chase they will run into the Oblivion. If using this ability to engage, it will be better to use it behind the enemies such that they are between the Oblivion and Samuel with his allies so that if they run away they will run into it.

Even though Samuel is a super strong hero, he still needs the right teammates to be super efficient.

GAUNTLET OF OBLIVION
Ardan works well with Samuel because Ardan has really good early game damage and his Vanguard can help Samuel kite around the enemy safely. Ardan's Gauntlet and Oblivion force enemy buy a Reflex Block and they have to use it to block one of the ultimate abilities. Whichever one isn't blocked should make the big impact in the team fight.


GYTHIAN VERDICT
Lance is strongest support in the early game which synergizes with how strong Samuel is as a jungler in the early game. Landing imaple and using Gythian Wall allows Samuel land his abilities when enemy is not in his basic attack range.

Breaking Point
Breaking Point when you get this item the longer the fight last the damage you gonna do and it works really good with the heroic perk.


Tyrant's Monocle
Tyrant's Monocle Most effective when combined with more weapon power and attack speed. After you got Breaking Point and Weapon Infusion you will have enough attack speed and you will have extra wp during the team fight. Buying a second tyrant's monnacle will allow for quick build of Breaking Point stacks.



Aegis
Aegis should be the crystal defensive item that you purchase because you will need the core shield and needing the reflex block for blocking a Atlas Pauldron.


Metal Jacket
Metal Jacket should always be your defensive item vs a weapon power carry due to it having the most amount of armor. This item is only necessary if the enemy has a weapon power carry.


Journey Boots
Journey Boots can help you to chasing people or run away and the CD is really good in the late game.



Weapon Infusion
the attack speed and the wp is really good for wp build.

Playing the EARLY GAME: (t = 0:00 - 8:00)



1. Starting ITEMS: Weapon Blade, Malice & Verdict,[/a] - Make sure you can hit LV2 in the jungle before the fighter if you didn't just back off
2. Make sure you always kite around enemy melee hero with your support. If enemy jungle carry is a range hero just use A+B combo out range them , don't forget to use your power basic attack Corrupted Genius to do more damage and make sure you are not getting low during the fight.
3. Jungle wp Samuel should always win the jungle fight after Lv2 ,When enemy is low you should always use your Drifting Dark to go in with the Vanguard

Playing the MID GAME: (t = 8:00 - 15:00)


1. WP Samuel should stop using the abilities during the team fight the base damage on Samuel's abilities start falling off.
2. Oblivion is one of the best CC in the vainglory ,you can save Oblivion to counter enemy ult like Verse of Judgement you can also use Oblivion to start a team fight.
3. trying to get as more as you can Breaking Point stacks on enemy front lane before you go on enemy carry
4. use Drifting Dark to scare enemy and do basic attack on it gonna make you looks cool.
5. block the Atlas Pauldron to make sure you can do damage all the time.

Playing the LATE GAME: (t = 15:00 - End of Game)


1.block the atlas
2.dodge the stun
3.as long as you stay alive your Breaking Point is going to help you to win the team fight.

1. aggressive . - You need be aggressive enough after you hit LV2 in the jungle , go in with your A+B combo whenever you saw a chance , you need do an auto attack after/before the Malice & Verdict to make sure you can do as more damage as you can . Stutter step all game long to dodge enemy abilities and position your self.



2. Voice communication. When you got a lot Breaking Point stacks you should let your support knows you are going to go on enemy carry and support gonna help a lot, like Vanguard from Ardan make you can get their carry in your attack range earlier . Let your team know when and who you are going to sue Oblivion ,sleep one of their carry and go another carry or sue Oblivion and Gauntlet at same time go start a team fight. The Oblivion can also save your teammates if they need help .


3. Positioning. Positioning in team fights is very important as a wp Samuel, Samuel can dodge a lot enemy ability with stutter step but its gonna take time to practice .Its so hard for me to tell you what is a good position because good position is different in different and every fight is different ,they only thing I can tell you is never stop stutter step and this is going to help you to get a better position.
