I typically use atlas pauldron when facing a WP melee hero such as Krul and glaive, as you can activate its ability to slow his attack speed.
For a ranged WP like saw or ringo I would build metal jacket instead as atlas pauldron's ability wouldn't make a difference.
Going up against CP heroes using rebuffs like frostburn, you want to build crucible-- triggering it will block all debuffs.
As for fountain of renewal, if you're playing support like adagio or Skaarf you will use this to keep you and your allies in the fight for longer at critical junctures. If your teammates are having a hard time managing damage you can use this to help.
In my experience, aegis has been used mainly for blocking stuns. Mainly Catherine.
I'm no expert, but hopefully this has been some help!
Armor blocks basic attacks and shield blocks crystal power, so I recommend Metal Jacket for strong WP heroes like Saw or Ringo, but for heroes who have extreme crystal power like Skaarf or Petal Aegis is really helpful. It can also save your life with the block so that you can escape to your tower. Crucible is good when you have Catherine or Joule, and someone with debuffs, because it blocks debuffs. Blocking stuns from Catherine is important because she gets armor every time she stuns someone, so you can get a pierce advantage if you block the stuns.
