Im confused about buying items in succession, and whether or not the power amounts "stack" or not. Here's what I mean...
Crystal Bit costs 300 and gives +20 Crystal Power. Heavy Prism costs 950 and gives +60 Crystal Power. Consider the following two routes of going about purchasing items...
Buy Heavy Prism = 950 coins spent, 60 Crystal Power gained
OR
Buy Crystal Bit (+20), THEN buy Heavy Prism (+60) = 950 coins spent, 80 Crystal Power gained
If I'm correct, purchasing the cheaper tier 1 items and then buying tier 2 items ends up giving you more Crystal/Weapon power for the same price (since the prices lower once you buy a tier 1 item) as it would to save up and buy the tier 2 item from the start.....is this correct?
Yes I belive they do !you can go to pratice mode and check your char stats out by using the learn tab on the bottom right then hit more it breaks down your chat stats there
Stats will stack. Passives from items will not. For example, two Metal Jacket will give you twice the armor and shield, but two Tension Bow will not grant a double tension bow effect (although you will still get the additional shield pierce and attack power).
As for the original question in this thread, @Skeletor is right. Upgrading a T1 item into a T2 item will not save you any money or give you more stats.
On the other hand, let's say you were going to eventually build a Frostburn, you can grab two Crystal Bit in the early game and it WILL be more cost effective. Two Crystal Bit at 600 gold will give you +40 crystal power, as opposed to spending 650 gold for an Eclipse Prism that only grants +35 crystal power.

Note that buying a Barbed Needle, a Book of Eulogies, and a Serpent Mask as individual items will stack their passives (the heal granted by killing something), since they are different items that have similar passives.
