Please, try out the build yourself before you criticize. Against a ranged laner, you regenerate any health lost quickly with the Book of Eulogies, which is completely broken for a melee laner. BP gives 15 weapon power per stack to a melee hero. That's 300 WP at max stacks, which is like carrying 2 Sorrowblades (not even taking into account the 100% crit chance). You build tanky so that you can sit in the battle, seemingly dying, for a long time, until you build up your stacks and life steal like crazy. +1 for this build!

@Yangusbeef, Utilized poorly and this build will not perform well. That's for sure. As far as gold goes, being able to farm in the lane allows you to complete this Lane Glaive build faster and then become a prolonged-battle nightmare. A coordinated team will help support this playstyle as well.

He gets all the gold because he can do tons of damage with the BP, and use it to it's full potential with the defence. Lane Glaive is incredibly powerful. Go watch the video and you'll see for yourself.

@Englewingz, laning as a melee is tough and takes practice. Focus on last-hitting, stay near your turret for protection, and the enemy laner will fall behind in gold if they try to poke you too much (thus in effectiveness, especially in team fights).

Lane Glaive seems powerful... until you face a ranged laner (which never happens in ESL for some reason)
