The reason I choose warhorn over contraption in most cases is because warhorn also gives health. Ardans vanguard ability scales off of his health that he gets from items. More bonus health means a bigger vanguard barrier. Contraption can be great too, I use it when I play phinn all the time, but warhorn just has more synergy with Ardan. Hope I was helpful!
