What is "buff" damage?

Catherine's stormgaurd ability has been changed to reflect buff damage, but I'm not sure what buff damage means so I'm not sure how it affects her gameplay.

Buff damage is similar to Adagio's Gift of Fire perk, and scales with crystal power. To put it simply, this buff damage will not steal last hits when you have the Ironguard, similar to Adagio.

You can also buy a Frostburn and slow the enemy just by walking near them.
